Abstract

Contemporary Qur’anic interpretation is required to address the dynamics of multicultural
societies contextually while maintaining textual accuracy. This study examines religious
moderation in M. Quraish Shihab’s interpretation of QS. Al-Hujurat verse 13 and its
relevance to Indonesia’s multicultural society. The objective of this research is to identify
the principles of moderation employed by Quraish Shihab in interpreting the verse
concerning human diversity and to analyze its contribution to fostering tolerance, social
harmony, and the prevention of religion-based conflicts. This research employs a
qualitative approach using library research methods. Primary data were obtained from
Tafsir Al-Mishbah and Kaidah Tafsir written by M. Quraish Shihab, while secondary data
were collected from scholarly literature related to religious moderation and contemporary
Qur’anic interpretation. Data were analyzed through content analysis by examining
linguistic, historical, and social aspects of the interpretation. The findings reveal that
Quraish Shihab applies six principles of moderation: comprehensive linguistic analysis,
understanding of asbab al-nuzul (occasions of revelation), inter-verse correlation
(munasabah), integration of riwayah and dirayah, emphasis on social relevance, and a
wasathiyyah perspective that rejects both literalist extremism and excessive liberalism.
The phrase lita‘?raf? is interpreted as an active human interaction that promotes mutual
respect, cooperation, and universal humanitarian awareness. Therefore, Quraish Shihab’s
interpretation is highly relevant as a foundation for strengthening religious moderation
and social cohesion in Indonesia.
