KONSEP PENDIDIKAN PERDAMAIAN (PEACE EDUCATION) DALAM PEMIKIRAN AL-GHAZALI

Peace education is an educational approach aimed at fostering individuals who possess moral awareness, spiritual depth, and social responsibility in order to create harmonious social life. In pluralistic societies that are vulnerable to conflict, peace education becomes an urgent necessity, particularly within Islamic education. This article seeks to examine the concept of peace education in the thought of Imam Al-Ghazali and its relevance to the development of Islamic education. This study employs a qualitative approach using library research methods by analyzing Al-Ghazali’s major works, such as Ihya’ ‘Ulum al-Din, Ayyuha al-Walad, and Mizan al-‘Amal, along with other relevant supporting literature. The findings indicate that Al-Ghazali’s concept of peace is rooted in self-control and the purification of the soul (tazkiyat al-nafs) as a means to attain true happiness (as-sa‘?dah). Peace is not merely understood as the absence of external conflict, but rather as an inner state of tranquility and balance achieved through the mastery of desires, anger, and other destructive traits. Peace education, from Al-Ghazali’s perspective, emphasizes the integration of knowledge, moral character, and spirituality. Education should not only aim to develop intellectual intelligence but also to shape peaceful, tolerant, patient, and socially responsible individuals. Therefore, Al-Ghazali’s thought offers a holistic model of peace education that remains highly relevant in addressing contemporary challenges such as moral decline, intolerance, and social conflict.
